at christmas, there's nothing like stepping into a home full of beautiful christmas decorations. from the christmass tree lit up with lights, to the personalised presents under it and the vibrant and welcoming christmas table dressed and ready for christmas lunch, it's one of the best times of year to get creative with your surroundings and have a bit of fun with decorations and crafty creations.

our friend melanie holt at all the frills knows how to create a seriously stylish christmas theme and execute it beautifully. we asked her for a few tips on how to bring christmas to life at home in a chic, scandi-style way - here are her last minute steps to personalise your christmas style.

step 1: string it up
make your own garlands from almost anything and all you need is some twine a hole punch, cut the shape out of balsa wood, paper or fabric, punch two holes and tread the twine through and repeat. even easier thread beads onto nylons for a cute scandi inspired bead garland that can be used beyond christmas:

step 2: maximse your christmas tree
make the most of the pine needles from your christmas tree. more often than not you will have your tree against a wall, so why not trim a few pine needles from the back and use them for a centrepiece, wreath or whip together a few pine needle tassels?

step 3: reuse, recycle + personalise
recycle old christmas baubles with a can of spray paint and for extra embellishment, add little illustrations with an acrylic marker:

step 4: it's a wrap
when it come to personalising wrap, gather a selection of plain wraps and fabrics that work with your colour palette, then embellish, illustrate, tag it, stamp it, paint it and so on to create a stylish wrap store to compliment your style:

step 5: beautify your crackers
buy inexpensive crackers and make them look like you bought them at a boutique. just remove the tacky ribbon replace it with wrapped twine and cut and stick a balsa wood tree motif on the front.

RAW GINGERBREAD COOKIES

equipment:
dehydrator
food processor

ingredients:
2 cups medjool dates (pitted)
1 cup rice malt syrup
3 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp fresh grated ginger
3 tsp five spice
1 tsp cardamom
1 tsp nutmeg

optional:
raw chocolate sauce
½ cup coconut oil
½ cup rice malt syrup
½ cup raw cacao powder

method:
blend dates, coconut oil, rice malt syrup and spices in a food processor until creamy. add almond flour and process further until a sticky mixture forms. press onto lined trays into a flat layer of about 5mm thick. if you have cookie cutters, use these before putting into the dehydrator. use nuts, berries, seeds etc to decorate. i love using goji berries and cacao nibs.

dehydrate at 46 degrees for 24 hours or until crunchy.

optional:
after your cookies have dehydrated, decorate them with chocolate sauce with a piping set, or a narrow lipped bottle. warm your coconut oil in a bowl over another bowl of hot water. when this has turned to liquid, add your rice malt syrup and stir with a fork. when this has mixed thoroughly add your raw cacao powder and stir further. you  may want to leave this in the fridge for a couple of minutes to get to the right consistency to pipe with. place in your piping kit and decorate as you like!

*if you do not have a dehydrator you can use your oven at a low temperature to create delicious healthy cookies.

to bring a little cheer to our windows for the 2014 holiday season, we partnered with the creative and crafty melanie holt from local event styling busines all the frills to create a hand-crafted window display that captures the essence of the new high-summer styles and holiday feeling in the windows of moochi stores. through mel's experience as the director of all the frills, she's created some beauitful event designs (sneak a peek at some of her work here) so we knew she was the perfect person for the job.

finding inspiration from the theme and colour palette of our new holiday range, mel designed a confetti window installation (made by hand!) to create a festive but modern decoration for our store front. we think this is perfectly suited to our motto for the holiday season... throw kindness around like confetti!

mel has also created a confetti bar in our newmarket store for tomorrow's teed street christmas party event. so come along and make up you own little box of confetti goodness to keep for yourself or use in your holiday celebrations.

here's a little behind the scenes look at the installation process - read on for mel's how-to for confetti making and how to bring this simple and effective craft into your gift giving this christmas.

steps for making confetti jar gifts:

1. pull together a fun colour combination and gather your tissue
2. cut end of the tissue into strips
3. cut through the strips to make squares or rectangles of confetti.
4. once all the tissue is cut, mix colours together, you now have confetti!

these confetti jars make for the cutest hostess gift just as is or gift wrapping alternative, just hide a moochi gift card or jewellery inside and finish off by customising the jar with an acrylic marker pen.

the festive season is upon us and the countdown to christmas is on... yay!! we always look forward to this time of year as it offers a great excuse to dress up our stores and have some serious fun with our installations and styling.

we love the freedom of the more non-traditional festive styling trends and shaking up the tired old red, green and gold colour scheme. so now that tinsel is out and the options are seemingly endless when it comes to dressing your space for the silly season, we turned to interior styling expert leeann yare in a collaboration we're so excited about...

leeann was tasked with styling the interior and window spaces of our eight moochi stores for christmas and we just love what she's created - so much shape and colour! using paper decorations available from her store collected, along with floral garlands made from leis she found at the $2 store, leeanne really brought a festive flavour to our stores in a way that says 'kiwi christmas' more than any scrappy tinsel or glass baubles could!

in place of having a traditional pine tree in store, which can sometimes struggle to last the distance to christmas day in the sunny conditions, leeann opted for pine tree decal stickers instead, which are so effective when installed over the length of our windows and walls - check out the pics below from our stores to see what was achieved. love!!

 christmas arrives at newmarket

we asked leeann what for her advice on how to re-create this modern christmas atmosphere at home. here are some of her tips:

1. play with colour
today, red and green is no longer a pre-requisite for christmas decorating! don't be afraid to mix-it-up when it comes to your christmas colour palette. whether its floral brights, neon or a monochromatic story, keep things fresh by changing up your tree and table setting theme each year to suit the colours you're currently enjoying. my colour scheme at home this year is a mix of soft colours with a few pops of neon, and I'm using my all time favourite wrap, brown Kraft paper, decorated our collected mini wall dots and finished with natural twine and a luggage tag.

2. cheep is cheerful
the best decorations are simple, yet effective. you don't have to spend the earth on expensive department store ornaments when budget stores are filled with colourful goodies that can achieve the same result. with little diy know-how (or a few handy online tutorials!) you can create beautiful garlands and hanging decorations, just like the ones we created for moochi, without breaking the budget. this year, I'm using our Collected bold coloured vintage style melamine plates and bowls, all mixed not matched, and perfect for summer entertaining!

3. maximise your space
no room for a tree? each day we get closer to christmas i see more and more inspiring and creative tree-alternatives perfect for where space is at a premium. the tree decals we used in the moochi stores create an instant christmas feel and probably take less time to install than a real tree! you could also try hanging a cluster of decorations from the ceiling to create a focal point for the room without taking up floor space. the possibilites are endless...
