espadrilles have survived 700 years in style. the shoe originated in 14th-century, worn by peasants in the spanish pyrenees, and then revitalised by audrey hepburn, as princess ann, when she kicks off her high heels in favor of flat espadrilles in the 1953 classic roman holiday and again when screen siren grace Kelly was photographed lounging in espadrilles on the set of to catch a thief in 1955.

lucky for us, they're again now basking in the sartorial spotlight with fashionistas and bloggers ditching their heels in favour of these laid back, stylish and comfortable kicks. with natural, braided rope soles, the shoes instantly take on an aura of effortless chic. here are some of our favourite street style snaps to inspire:

there was a time (not that long ago) when slinging a jacket over your shoulders was perceived as pretentious and a bit silly, but now the look is all over street style blogs and has been de rigueur at fashion weeks in new york, london, paris and milan. we're skipping sleeves in favor of a slung-jacket look: not actively putting on the jacket or coat, just letting it be there, draped on their shoulders and guarding us against the cold.

logistically, of course, this is no easy feat. forget hugs when greeting a friend, shoulder bags are impossible and add a bit of wind and your jacket is left splayed on ground. really doing anything with your arms is out of the question. but impractical as it may seem, there is a way to pull off  jacket-as-cape without losing your top layer.

the best time for slinging is when you’re in transit, going from a-to-b - from the office to a nearby outside meeting, or from the school run back to the house. once inside, wearing a coat like this is a stylish way to forgo the coat check. one pitfall of this trend is that without the jacket secured on your arms it can easily fall off and be forgotten e.g in the back of the cab... so try with caution!

here’s a few of our fav moochi pieces we’ve styled in our little “perched over her shoulder” looks for you this week. enjoy!

this friday we launch our winter 2014 collection, mixing soft, feminine silhouettes with architectural statement pieces and a sophisticated colour story in an elegant capsule collection for the new season.

texture takes a lead role this winter, with a collection that embraces mixed materials – blending black velvet stripe, gold beading, snake textured satin, luxury knit, silk and leather to create a number of multi-dimensional outfit options for the cool season.

a subtle oriental influence can be seen in the kimono silhouette, origami pleating and japanese draping of some of the collection’s key pieces, while loungewear-inspired separates are elevated with rich colour and luxurious fabrics.

featuring 17 pieces to love, the moochi winter 2014 look heroes a simple black and white colour palette, with darkest-black statement pieces interposed with highlights of deep green, black and white pinstripe and gold detailing.

here are some of the inspiration shots from our winter 14 moodboard to help tell the story and illustrate the mood of this bold collection, available in limited numbers at moochi stores from 11 march and online at www.moochi.co.nz.

it’s all in the detail

encompassing warm, toffee silks, monochromatic faux fur, black leather panelling,  sequin detailing and a signature cougar print, we’ve pulled out all the stops this season to ensure each piece is impeccably finished. from the sexy silhouette of the strappy lift maxi, to the strong lines of the rev jacket and cozy cover-up of the lead vest, the moochi autumn collection will have women channelling tony montana’s unforgiving ‘lady tiger’ and revelling in excess this autumn.

we're making a splash this summer with our summer collection 2013  'point break'!

taking inspiration from 90s surf culture and exploring high-tech sportswear, here we present a collection rife with energy and colour.

crisp whites are constrasted with high-vis, hyper-colours in neon orange and ocean blue, while strong, sporty lines rule supreme in a collection inspired by beachside brights and endless summers.

given the season, there is a real focus on playful dresses and relaxed singlets in an abundance of fresh brights and striking tye-dye, whilst monochromatic, more high-fashion pieces compliment the collection.

'point break' consists of high-tech fabrics made from the finest of materials, including mesh, tribal jacquard, white denim and neoprene.

the trend: new-grunge

plaid, oversized shirts, denim and slouchy tees - the relaxed, grunge-inspired styles seen on both the northern hemisphere's fall fashion runways and the bodies of off-duty a-listers, is like a trip down memory lane for 90s kids. while the return of style trends from a bygone era is often met with hesitation from those who've lived through them before (been there, done that, got the nirvana t'shirt!), we think the 'neo-grunge' or 'new-grunge' trend is one we should all take note of - and so too says the september issue of vogue paris, which was wholly dedicated to this re-visited fashion movement.

taking its cues from the grunge style made famous by cobain and love in the 90s, our 'nevermind' spring fashion story could look right at home on the streets of seattle all those years ago, but with feminine checks, soft chambrays and modern digital floral prints, the 'nevermind' look is a grown-up, dressed-up and wearable take on the signature 90s look.

key look: the shirt

arguably the most recognisable symbol of pre-00s grunge style is the plaid, button-down shirt. the first time around, this was worn in mostly dark reds, blues or greys and defined by masculine, oversized shapes. today, the button down has evolved to incorporate a more feminine look, with soft checks in blush and muted tones and a mix of cotton and chambray fabrics.

our 'prize shirt' from the nevermind range is the perfect addition to a low-maintenence, off-duty spring wardrobe. style tip: wear it tied around your waist for that signature grunge effect!

key colour: grey marle

grunge's casual cool is sometimes best represented in a simple grey marle, one of the key colour stories from our nevermind range. this colour looks great in our relaxed tee options, including the nevermind tee - with a cute, flattering shape and embroidered  typographic; the pave sweat - a comfortable sweatshirt tee with leather look sleeves; and the hipster tee - a plain tee with the added 'sleeves' tied at the waist to give it that grungy 'nevermind' attitude.

if there’s one person who owns the blazer look, it'd have to be the effortlessly cool editor-in-chief of french vogue, emmanuelle alt – the style icon who inspired our latest blazer offering, the alt jacket.

when creating the alt jacket, we really tried to capture the versatility and ‘mix-and-matchability’ we’ve come to love about alt’s everyday style. whether she’s in the office, on the streets of paris, or attending an event, we love alt’s knack for achieving a sophisticated, yet rock-and-roll look with her uniform dressing of tailored jackets, cropped skinny pants and cool tees.

take a leaf out of alt’s book and invest in a versatile jacket for all occasions. clever boyfriend tailoring and a super flattering shape make our alt jacket a must-have signature piece for the transition into spring… and beyond! finished at mid-length, this trans-seasonal piece works with separates and dresses to give you some great day to night outfit options, from the boardroom to the bar.

three ways to wear the alt jacket:

work it - power dressing with style. pair your alt jacket with our smart swagger pant and crane top for a contemporary corporate look – for when you really need to impress at the office!

street style - the alt jacket elevates your everyday wardrobe worn over a cute printed tee and skirt – style tip: sling yours over your shoulders for a sleek, effortless chic.

step out - dress up your daytime look for stepping out into the night with the alt jacket, heels and a simple clutch – great for those less than balmy spring nights!

let us know how you style yours xx

stripes: from the catwalk to your wardrobe

the mega trend of the spring is stripes. basically, anything in black and white goes but if it's striped, it's even better - as seen across the spring 2013 catwalks from Dolce & Gabbana to Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors. moochi’s first spring line – graphic scenes – is set to please with an assortment of styles in black and white stripe. Either horizontal or vertical, mixed with other graphics and prints, spring 13 is striped!

here are a few ways to mix stripes into your spring wardrobe:

the stripe blouse: a classic blouse in stripe can paired back with solid-coloured pieces to focus attention on your one statement piece. style tucked into tailored shorts, as seen on the Paul & Joe Spring 2013 runway, or wear with killer jeans.

the festive stripe - while there's often a nautical vibe associated with the trend, play with other stripe iterations. reference Ralph Lauren's Spring 2013 collection as an example, and search out festive, travel-inspired styles.

the mod stripe - this season, one of the strongest ways to rock stripes is by going for a retro vibe, á la the Moschino Spring 2013 runway. perfect the look with a simple color palette, preferably black and white, and bold details.

the dress - classic, easy-to-wear pieces feel especially perfect in a print that's stood the test of time. simple shifts like Dolce & Gabbana did for Spring 2013 feel special, but still ready to wear anywhere.
