designing and making clothes is a really interesting process! within NZ fashion businesses there are a number of different process models being used. we know that you are keen to learn more about this and that you do really value NZ made. we do too but it is not always possible. currently around 85% of what we make is done in NZ, which is pretty amazing!

when i first started my label, moochi in 2000, everything i designed was made in NZ,  but our product line was quite limited to what NZ makers could do. we have over the years added specialty products, like shoes, to our collections (that our local industry is not able to deliver), reaching out to offshore makers, most of which are ironically NZ based with family businesses offshore.

we are still very hands on, 'boutique' in the way we do things, which surprises people more often than not. I think the brand now has such a strong name that people think we are bigger than we are!! we have six stores plus online. we have never ventured into wholesaling our lines to other stores, as we like our designs to be wrapped in the full moochi experience!

the tools of our trade are very much scissors and pins, but we also have to be pretty good on a computer too to share with you what we are doing!

this flow chart tells you how we do things. i am really proud of the business we have created and i can't shout loud enough about how clever the team is that works for and with moochi. it is a fast moving, challenging industry, with a product line that changes almost 100% every 3-6 months. some industries make the same thing year in and year out, we are constantly in create mode to bring you newness. this can be pretty crazy at times but we love it!!

spring knitwear!!!

we are excited to introduce you to our spring line up of knitwear. creating a knitwear collection requires us to remember the key shapes that we all love to wear, like a long line cardigan and also to offer details that make moochi pieces more than just basics.

this season we have used two yarns, a dry handle cotton, for relaxed wearablity and a slinky high shine viscose that feels amazing on the skin.

the quill cardi and quill tunic

the cotton yarn is knitted into the 'quill' pieces above. the vee neck longline quill cardi and the easy throw on quill tunic have the coolest long line tail to give you outfit that design edge. best worn with skinny bottoms like skinny jeans, panel and skeleton legs, they are available in must have black and sage green. the green will be super nice as the weather warms up and you want to dress a little lighter in colour. i have my quill cardi on today with the patterned stem pants and marigold slippers. so easy to wear but far from boring! when we shot them last week on jane, we were so pleased with how great these pieces look when you outfit them. the cardigan is as good worn open, with s implement 6xx7 tank underneath,  as it is closed too.

the cape

the other cotton piece in ever perfect grey marle is our cape. If you take one piece of knitwear away with you this summer I think it should be this!! it can be worn with a vee neck and the long points at the front, or with a square neck and a square hemline at the front. when you try it in you will see what i mean!  throw it on over everything for a little bit of warmth, in a super soft grey marle shade that will stand the test of time. perfect for a beach walk or over your shorts at a summer bbq. oooooh i can't wait for these moments!

the boy sweater

already a huge hit is the slinky boy sweater! available in black and a shade labelled silver that is so unique it was hard to put a name too. this style has an easy vee neck, long sleeves and an easy fit body that sits to about the hip, it is slightly longer at the back than the front. definitely the piece for right now and as shown in silver in the photos, it looks super chic with our new lux pant, a simple pull on elasticated leg style that can be worn casually or dressed up. the sweater is also shown with our pleated fantail skirt. this is a fab day to night outfit!

the ballet cardi

last but not least, also in the slinky yarn, is the ballet cardi, which can be worn back to front as a sweater too! we love this style with our petal skirt, but are sure you will also see it's value as a 'pop on cardi', over our easy summer dresses.

behind the movie...

as you know we launched a short film last week, so we thought we'd give you a wee bit of insight to the behind the scenes on location of filming...

inspired by a whimisical children's book, the poison diaries, the 'beautiful poison' collection has four chapters - each telling it's own story. we were so excited by these stories that we couldn't resist the temptation to interpret the ideas through film.

working with the creative and talented film team from 'clair obscur' we spent a freezing winters day on the side of mt eden, at an old quarry that is now 'eden garden'. the setting was insanely beautiful and our models india (blonde) and timena (dark) braved the cold to star in their first film!

with a call time of 7am, we soon relised that working on film wasn't for the faint hearted! a few coffees, lemon, honey and ginger teas and blankets later and the film crew clair obscur, hair stylists from vada, kimberly from MAC, red eleven models india and timena and the moochi team were ready to rock and roll!

after a full day of filming we managed to capture the true essence of what the spring collection is all about!!!

we are soooo happy with the result - it's an amazing experience to see your fashion dream unfold.

to check out the magic of the film here

we'd love to know what you think!!!

the team here at moochi head office are big baking fans - well at least i am! and everyone is more than happy to be my 'sampling team'. so when i brought in a fav brownie of mine which i like to call 'to die for' triple chocolate brownie, we thought it was only fair that we shared the goodness with you in our edition magazine and now on the blog!

to die for brownie

185g butter
185g dark chocolate, chopped
3 eggs
1 1/4 cups caster sugar
2/3 cup plain flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup roughly chopped white chocolate
3/4 cup roughly chopped milk chocolate

1. preheat the oven to 180 c.
2. melt butter and dark chocolate in a saucepan over a low heat and still until smooth - allow to cool
3. place the eggs and sugar in a bowl and beat with electric mixer until light and creamy
4. sift the flour and cocoa over the mixture and mix to combine.
5. add the white and milk chocolate then pour into a square (23cm) cake tin, lined with non-stick baking paper.
6. bake for 35-40 minutes or until set.
7. allow to cool, then cut into squares.

makes 20 pieces

i'd love to hear how you get on with it and feel free to post some pics to our facebook page!

enjoy

as part of our spring collection we have included the introduction of a new line, 6 and 7. designed for days 6 and 7 of the week, with a more relaxed style.

made in nz, these styles are going to be your new best friends and are sure to make days 6 and 7 that much sweeter!
we suggest teaming them with a relaxed fit 'des pant', cut-off denim or our new fav 'quick draw shorts'.

1. the turn tank

an easy fitting tank with a t back and curved seam details. the stripes will come at all angles. the fit is relaxed and the hemline is longer on one side than the other.

wear with the runway short or team with our des pants to take you to the cafe on saturday morning! too easy!

2. dream wrap tee

the perfect collision of boy meets girl. ballerina inspired styling in a boxy fit; the drapes can be worn at the front or the back. this can be worn fitted or loose depending on your style.

this tee can be teamed with different proportions, if your after a longer short for spring i suggest teaming this with the lounge crop (my personal fav) or for a shorter version the quick draw short - in either the great weed print or black!

3. print tee's

we LOVE our printed tee's this season an easy tee with our exclusive seasonal prints, inspired by our theme 'beautiful poison'. featuring a abstract butterfly print and thorny heart! these tees have an easy fit, and will look great with all your summer outfits, wear off the shoulder, loose fitting or knotted with a maxi - so versatile!

4. turn dress

a scoop neck dress with curved seam details to love - throw on and you are ready to go. the perfect easy dress for days 6 and 7 every week! this dress is a simple fit, with detailed seaming. go up a size if you want it slightly oversized, wear with our marigold slippers, great platform or with chucks!

5. his tee

man up in this boyish tee with self rolled cuff and a straight body shape. easy to outfit with androgynous pieces and girlie ones too! it is a straight cut with a relaxed fit, go up a size if you want it slightly oversized. we love this with our quick draw short - loose or knotted! and it goes perfectly with cuffed skinny jeans for a sunday brunch look or wear with our lounge crop and great platforms for a chic work look!

6. asym tunic

an oversized asymmetric long tee tunic to wear over your cut off jeans and leggings we also LOVE it over our liquid long skirt. designed to slip off one shoulder and with a cut out detail across the back it has days 6 and 7 covered!

we hope you enjoy these styles as much as we do! all styles available in store now or shop online here

we can tell you are already loving the 6 and 7 group and we look forward to bring you more goodness over the coming seasons!
