in recognition of fashion revolution week, we want to show a behind-the-scenes look at the making of your moochi pieces, as part of our commitment to greater transparency in garment production.
your garment story
the life of your moochi garment begins as a sketch, hand crafted on paper in the design room of the moochi ‘designpod’ in grey lynn, auckland.
the idea behind the sketch may have arrived suddenly, inspired by an international trend, colour or unique fabric print, or it may have existed for a time in a similar form, evolving and adapting until finally a logical place for it was found.
for the lucky designs that are selected for the design room wall, which reads like a ‘storyboard’ of the new season’s collections, there are still many weeks and many hands to travel through before you’ll find it neatly pressed and hung in your local moochi store.
moochi operates like a traditional designer brand in the way we create our products – design, fabricate, sample, make. with new product delivering into moochi stores weekly, this is no easy task.
from pattern maker to presser, before you meet your new moochi garment, more than twenty industry professionals, including our skilled in-house production team, experienced local contractors and some off-shore specialists, have had a hand in creating it.
it’s the commitment to the local industry that has allowed us to create the brand that moochi is today.
since moochi began in 2000, then designed and produced from a workroom in tauranga, we’ve been able to build strong and trusted relationships with a range of supply partners who we now have the pleasure of working closely with to create more of what you love – beautiful garments crafted with care in small, exclusive runs.
each product comes with its own set of challenges. all moochi lines, from knitwear and specialty cloths to leather and accessories, follow a different production process that over time has had to be perfected through adaptation. as our product range has grown and developed, so has our network of specialist partners with the skills and equipment to meet our needs.
today, we work with a select number of supply partners across auckland, northern india and guangdong province in china, each chosen for their unique skills, shared values and commitment to quality.
our production team visits our factories on a regular basis to ensure all moochi standards are being as closely cared for as they are in our greylynn design room. we are committed to producing our garments only in environments that meet international labour standards outlined by the ILO (international labour organisation).
we know that women choose moochi not just for a special event or to wear once, but with the expectation that her pieces will be the most worn in her wardrobe.
we want to provide pieces for women to wear often and love more, while continuing to support our local production industry where we can and creating opportunities for future industry leaders that love fashion as much as we do.
